USS Liscome Bay (CVE-56) November 24, 1943

72 years ago today, while operating in the Battle of Tarawa, the USS Liscome Bay was torpedoed. The resulting explosion caused the carrier to sink within minutes, taking with it, 644 men. Only 272 were rescued. It was a catastrophic loss of life.

The men lost that day deserve to be remembered and honored. They played a big part in destroying a totalitarian regime that was bent on world domination. Their service and ultimate sacrifice was certainly not made in vain.

The survivors of the Liscome Bay also deserve to be honored and remembered for the same reason. Many of them are no longer with us and it won't be long until none of them remain. We cannot let the memories and accomplishments of these men go away with them.

We salute those who lost their lives that day. We salute those that survived. We salute those that remain.

Burial at sea for two of those lost that day.
