Remembering Three F/A-18 Pilots

On this day, September 15, 1997, we lost two Marine pilots and one Navy pilot in two separate crashes.

The two Marines, Captain Brian Smith and Captain Stephen McDonald were returning to base at MCAS Beaufort from a training mission at the Piney Island Bombing Range. Cpt. McDonald was 30 years old. Cpt. Smith was 28 years old, married and he and his wife were expecting their first child.

The Navy pilot, Lt. Jason E Jakubowski, 26, was crashed in Oman while serving as part of Operation Southern Watch, which was overseeing Iraq'a no-fly zone. Lt Jakubowski was married and was the oldest of four brothers.

All three of these men were doing what they loved to do when they were taken from this earth. Flying and serving their country. We remember them and vow to never forget them.
