The PC-590 was a PC-461 Class Submarine Chaser. Manned by the Coast Guard, she was patrolling near Okinawa when she was involved in a cat and mouse game with three typhoons in the fall of 1945. The third one, Typhoon Louise finally caught up with the PC-590 and eventually broke her in half. Thankfully, all on board, including 15 enlisted men from the USS Forrest(DD-461) who were rescued prior to the final assault of the typhoon.
After the incredible rescue of all of those on board, the last man, Commander, LT. Charles Pool, only moments before she broke completely in half, the commander stated, "the absence of any loss of life is due only to God's will".
